The City of Aspen, located in Pitkin County, which currently has a cell tower height restriction of 40 feet, is considering adding flexibility to the height code. This is in an effort to attract more tower companies to construct in the area, so as to improve lacking, and even non-existent wireless coverage. Thus far, eight potential tower sites have been presented to a major tower company if the maximum height code is lifted. According to Pitkin County commissioner, “These days people just can’t be separated from their communication devices, and our economy depends on people who are tied in closely to the gadgets. Having a code that allows that to happen is the right thing to do.”

If the code is lifted and proposals are received for cell tower construction, Pitkin County needs to make sure they are properly represented and informed prior to signing any lengthy agreement. Vertical Consultants has worked with all types of property owners, including municipalities, who are being paid below-market value for the use of their property. The primary reason for this is the lack of information and representation provided for these entities. Vertical Consultants has made its mission to provide our clients the data they need. While telecom companies have professionals on their side who know the true value of every tower site they control, property owners should have advocates working for them determining options to optimize their telecom assets.
