Will Smart Cell Technology Replace Cell Towers?

If you have a cell phone tower on your property, you have probably become accustomed to receiving rent every month. It is understandable that you do not want to lose this reliable income from cell tower lease, so we understand when people call us worried about the latest trend in cellular network technology making their cellular tower obsolete. As with most issues in the cell tower industry, the answer will depend on your individual tower site; however, the majority of tower owners can rest easy for the time being.

The bad news for landowners is that phone companies desperately want to evolve cellular network technology. Take a look at that tower on your property. That cellular structure was not cheap to build, and it is not cheap to operate and maintain. Additionally, more and more landowners are coming to the realization that their tower site is worth more than they are being paid, and are retaining their own lease negotiators like those working at Vertical Consultants.

Cell tower lease experts tripled landowners’ rental income

celltowerleaseexpertsOver the last year, on average, we more than tripled landowners’ rental income, which we are happy to say, further eats into the profits of companies like Crown Castle and American Tower. Telecom giants like AT&T and Verizon have tens of thousands of cellular sites throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. It is easy to see why they so badly want an alternative to a giant network of cell towers.

Now that the bad news is over, here is the good news. If there were a viable alternative, it would be in place already. Despite the technology boom we are living through, where literally everything is being made smaller and more efficient, and despite the enormous potential profit that exists for the company who finds a replacement for cell towers, no complete replacement for suburban and rural cell towers is in our foreseeable future. While there are very few free-standing tower sites in larger cities, if you happen to own one of these towers, there may be some cause for concern due to smart cell technology.

SmartCells, or MicroCells, are base stations that are much smaller than cellular tower antenna structures. They can be connected to the side of a building or be installed inside an office complex. They are designed to serve a small dense area, like a train station or a sports arena. While your cell tower can pick up signals 15+ miles away, SmartCells have a network that reaches around 300 yards, so they work if the goal is only to cover one block or one building.

It is certainly conceivable that phone companies will choose to install a small box on every city block in major cities. However, in large cities, there are already very few freestanding cell phone towers. Communications companies have instead entered into thousands of rooftop leases and installed rooftop antennas and other equipment to build their network in densely populated areas.
